The CS Niwa is a cable laying ship within a fleet owned by the EMarine. EMarine has cable laying operations within the Red Sea, Arabian Gulf and Indian Ocean.

The CS Niwa is based in Abu Dhabi in the UAE.

Electric Cable Engines

Figure 2 - Cable Engines Port and Starboard

This project involved the building of two new LCE Linear Electric Cable Engines with Mitsubishi Q Series Control System, HMI and Frequency Inverters. The LCE's were built by Fraser Hydraulic Power Ltd FHP in Newcastle upon Tyne and the control system software by AN Automation Ltd.

Testing of the system was first carried out at FHP workshop followed by testing on ship while docked in port in Abu Dhabi. All pictures were taken from the ship.

Both cable engines had Constant Tension Control at Low Tensions which is what gives electrical driven machines the advantage over hydraulic engines. This makes them ideal for low tension cable such as fibre optics.

Figure 3 - Cable Drums

Cable being coiled in Ships cable tanks prior to laying

The cable is initially coiled up in the ships hold before being fed to either one or both engines. The cable is fed through the wheel pair of the electric engine then onto a cable drum and from the drum off the ship into the sea.

The engines hold the constant tension on the cable drum which will either payout or pickup or hold. While held the tension must also be held constant .
